Telefónica invests in the cloud with Joyent deal
Telefónica has signed a strategic investment deal with cloud services and technology company Joyent.
The operator said the deal would help it add to its cloud-based services, which are a 'key focus area' for its new digital unit. It added that the deal would combine 'Telefónica's global scale and infrastructure' with Joyent's cloud technology. It is planning to target small and medium enterprises and small office or home office customers with the cloud services.
Telefónica Digital chairman and CEO Matthew Key [pictured] said: 'This investment is further proof of our ambition in the area of cloud services and our strategy of working with the most innovative start-ups. Joyent’s technology fits perfectly with our in-house developed technologies and our cloud services model and enables us to provide more competitive offerings to a broader range of customer segments.'
Joyent founder and CEO David Young said: 'This strategic partnership and funding will enable us to expand our product offering to more regions and to evolve our products, taking advantage of the service provider vision brought by Telefonica.'
Joyent currently provides cloud services for more than 12,000 customers in the US.
