Apple displaces RIM as UK's most popular smartphone maker
Apple displaced BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) as the UK's most popular smartphone maker in 2011, research agency Gartner has claimed.
Yesterday, the research firm said that Samsung and Apple have increased their dominance at the top-end of the smartphone market. Sales of smartphones were up 58% to 472 million across 2011 and account for 31% of all devices sold.
It did not strip out individual country performance. However, a spokesperson for Gartner told Mobile that RIM slipped from first to third place during 2011. Samsung stole into second place after a particularly strong third quarter.
Global device sales across smartphones and feature phones were up 11.1% to 1.8 billion during 2011. Gartner principal research analyst Annette Zimmermann said yesterday: 'Expectations for 2012 are for the overall market to grow by about 7%, while smartphone growth is expected to slow to around 39%.'
