Apple wins slide to unlock patent case against Motorola Mobility

Apple has won a patent dispute against Motorola Mobility in Germany over its 'slide to unlock' feature.

The case is the latest in a spate of patent wars between manufacturers. Apple took the action against Motorola Mobility over two Android-powered devices that were unlocked by sliding an icon of a padlock across a screen.

A Motorola spokesperson said: 'Motorola has implemented a new design for the feature. Therefore, we expect no impact on current supply or future sales.'

Patent analyst Florian Mueller told the BBC that Apple's win was significant could potentially help Apple win other patent disputes around the world. He said: 'After Google closes the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, the Apple-Motorola Mobility dispute will soon gain importance transcending that of the global battle with Samsung...Apple is already asserting the slide-to-unlock patent in different jurisdictions against all three leading Android device makers and might use it against even more of them going forward.'

Earlier this week, Google received further approvals over its acquisition of Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn.
