Apple breaks iPad sales records with latest device
Apple has sold three million new iPads since the latest iteration of its tablet was launched on Friday (16 March).
It far outpaces the sales of its first generation iPad, which was launched in June 2010. It took 80 days for the manufacturer to reach the three million sales milestone.
Philip Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing, said: 'The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold - the strongest iPad launch yet. Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.'
The United Kingdom was among the 12 markets which began selling the iPad last week. Apple will launch the tablet device into another 24 markets this Friday (23 March).
Yesterday, the manufacturer announced it would pay its first dividend since 1995 and launched a share buyback programme in a bid to spend some of its $97.6bn cash surplus.
