Charles Dunstone receives knighthood

Charles Dunstone has received a knighthood for services to the mobile communications industry and to charity.

Sir Charles launched Carphone Warehouse in 1989, using £6,000 of savings, after dropping out of a business degree at Liverpool University.

In 2000 the Group, which had by then grown to be the largest independent mobile retailer in Europe, floated with a market capitalisation of £1.7bn, delivering Dunstone a £635m fortune. It currently has 1,700 stores.

Sir Charles is also a member of The Prince’s Trust council and chairman of The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Fellowship, which provides mentoring for young entrepreneurs and also sponsors the Fulwood Academy in Preston.
