Amazon 'developing its first smartphone'
Amazon is reportedly developing its own smartphone, which would see it do battle with Android and Apple in both the handset and tablet markets.
The retailer recently added to its patent team by hiring Matt Gordon, who was formerly senior director of acquisition at Intellectual Ventures Management. He will be general manager for patent acquisitions and investments at Amazon. The hire has been seen as a means of Amazon protecting itself against lawsuits if it was to develop new technology. A report in Bloomberg claimed Amazon is on a patent acquisition spree to defend itself in possible infringement cases.
The report claimed the smartphone would be built by Chinese phone maker Foxconn, although Amazon refused to comment on the claims.
Amazon launched its Kindle Fire tablet last November, with the low-cost device seen as a viable alternative to Apple's wildly successful iPad.
