Samsung launches app development competition

Samsung has launched an app development competition with a global prize fund of $4.08m available for winners.

The Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012 is asking developers to produce apps for the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab devices. Developers need to register on the smart app challenge website, and then make their app available for download on the Samsung Apps store. The prize fund will be split between 80 winning apps in a variety of categories, such as best game and best use of the Galaxy Note's S Pen. Winners will be judged according to the number of downloads, although the S Pen category will be judged by a specialist panel.

Simon Stanford, VP for Samsung UK & Ireland's telecommunications and networks division, said: 'At Samsung we want to provide opportunities and support for the development of innovative apps that make use of our hardware technology. The Samsung Smart App Challenge 2012 is a real opportunity for both established and budding app developers to secure funding and marketing support. It’s an exciting project and we’re looking forward to seeing what these developers create.'
