BlackBerry 10 to launch in January next year

Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins has confirmed the company will release its first BlackBerry 10 smartphones in January, according to reports.

Until now, the long-awaited platform and smartphones were expected to be unveiled in ‘the first quarter of 2013’.

Heins’ announcement of the delay to the BlackBerry 10 launch and plans to lay off 5,000 staff during RIM’s 28 June earnings call to analysts led to discussions about the manufacturer’s long-term future in the smartphone market.

However, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Heins confirmed the January launch date and also discussed a few options for the latest BlackBerry operating system, suggesting that RIM could license the platform to other mobile phone manufacturers.
