RIM appoints new UK MD

BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) has appointed Rob Orr as its new UK MD.

He replaces Stephen Bates, who has been appointed regional MD for Europe. Orr will formally take up the new role on 1 September. He was previously VP for product management in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and has worked at the company for the past six years.

A spokesman for the manufacturer said: 'In that time he [Orr] has been instrumental in helping the EMEA region grow to become a major part of RIM’s global business.'

Bates will be responsible for 'market responsiveness, customer engagement and maximising employee focus across the European organisation', the company said.

RIM said the changes are part of its plans to restructure the business ahead of the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 operating system next year, as well as its BlackBerry 7 and Mobile Fusion products. The company will cut 5,000 jobs as part of the restructure.
