Orange and Barclaycard announce Galaxy S III as first Quick Tap smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy S III will be the first Android smartphone compatible with Orange and Barclaycard's Quick Tap mobile payments service.

From tomorrow (5 September), new or upgrading Galaxy S III customers with a Visa or Mastercard can use the service. Anyone who signs up before the 5 October will receive £50 to spend in participating stores. After downloading an app, contactless payments of up to £20 can be made in more than 100,000 locations including McDonalds, M&S, Co-op Food and Prêt A Manger. Customers can upload up to £150 on their account via a debit or credit card and pay for items by tapping their phone on a payment terminal.

Simeon Bird, director of propositions at Orange UK, said: 'We are really excited to be launching Quick Tap payments on one of the most popular smartphones of the year. Contactless mobile payments are a secure and convenient alternative to cash and cards and we are pleased to be the first network brand in the UK to offer its customers such an innovative service.'

Tom Gregory, head of digital payments at Barclaycard, added: 'Barclaycard is committed to making paying for things faster, safer and easier. With the launch of Quick Tap payments on the Samsung Galaxy S III, Barclaycard is bringing a safe and secure new way to pay to customers of all UK banks. Mobile payments are safe and have a full fraud guarantee and we've seen ever growing numbers of people using contactless to make quick and secure payments of up to £20.'
