Apple has sent out invitations for a press event on 12 September, when it is widely expected to announce the new iPhone 5.
The invitation, which says 'It's almost here', plays on speculation about the next iPhone, with the number 12 casting a shadow that looks like the number five. The event will take place in San Francisco.
The launch date has been known for some time and speculation has been building for several months about the features of the new iPhone. A larger screen has been mooted, along with faster processor and greater memory.
Everything Everywhere will be cheered if the device is 4G compatible. The operator is striving to launch a 4G network in 2012 and it would be a significant coup to land an exclusive on a 4G-ready smartphone.
Apple's launch is part of a packed autumn schedule, with new Windows Phone devices from Samsung, Nokia and HTC set to be launched, among other smartphones. It is understood an unprecedented number of smartphone customers are out of contract in the UK and competition is expected to be fierce between operators, retailers and manufacturers.
