Carphone predicts surge in first-time buyers of smartphones
Carphone Warehouse has said it has seen a 'significant' increase in the number of customers considering buying a smartphone for the first time, with 15% of consumers intending to buy or upgrade in the next three months.
The retailer said a glut of high profile launches, which will include the iPhone 5, Nokia's new Lumias and Samsung's Windows Phone 8 Ativ S, will bring new customers to the smartphone market. It previously claimed there were 'millions' of iPhone 4 customers out of contract and holding off on upgrading as they wait for the latest devices to hit the market.
Carphone Warehouse CCO Graham Stapleton (pictured) said: 'It may seem hard to believe for some, but currently just 54% of Brits use smartphones and there are millions of people yet to enter the market. We’re on the precipice of some highly-anticipated handset launches and more and more consumers are considering purchasing smartphones than ever before. As the rumour mill goes into overdrive and speculation abounds online, we’re seeing a significant increase in the number of ‘first timers’ asking about and considering shifting to these types of device.'
