Carphone readies early openings to meet iPhone 5 demand

Carphone Warehouse is opening around 10 of its best performing stores early tomorrow in anticipation of 'astronomical' demand for the iPhone 5.

The handset goes on sale tomorrow [21 September] and the retailer has previously said it received four times as many pre-orders for the sixth version of the iPhone than for any other handset.

Carphone will prioritise its iPhone 5 allocation to its top 10 performing stores. Portsmouth Commercial Road, Newcastle Metro Centre, Birmingham New Street, Manchester Trafford Centre, and Leeds Briggate will all open at 8am. In London, its Stratford Westfield, 272 Oxford Street, Canary Wharf and Westfield White City branches will also open at the same time. Glasgow Braehead will open at 9.30am. Other branches will get a 'limited supply' of handsets.

Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer at Carphone Warehouse, said: 'Demand for this handset has been unprecedented. The number of pre-orders we’ve received has been astronomical and we do not want to disappoint those customers who have taken the time to register in advance, expecting to receive their handset on launch day.

'We’ve selected our top performing stores nationwide to offer customers who haven’t pre-ordered the chance to get their hands on all variants of this fantastic new device as soon as it’s available. However, handset stock will be limited so Apple fans who are keen to get an iPhone 5 tomorrow should prioritize these stores and arrive early.'
