Smartphones and tablets 'at risk from malware'

Only one in 20 smartphones and tablets have security software installed, despite an increasing threat from malware, a new report has claimed.

Research from Juniper said operators and manufacturers need to become aware of the commercial potential in integrating security features such as device tracking or remote locking and wiping. The research predicted both businesses and consumers will become more aware of the importance of protecting their data. By 2017, one in five devices will be protected by third party security software. The increasing trend of Bring Your Own Device will mean the number of protected consumer devices will overtake corporate devices by 2015. The total number of employee owned smartphones and tablets used for business will reach 350 million within two years.

The report's author Nitin Bhas said: 'Bundling mobile security apps along with other managed services will not only provide incremental revenue for the service providers, but will also help them guarantee better customer satisfaction and churn.'
