Tech Data Mobile is launching an aggressive push for growth, following on from its acquisition by Tech Data Corporation.
The mobile distributor, formerly known as Brightstar Europe, is aiming to use the financial strength and reach of its parent group to grow its share of the mobile and accessories distribution market, as part of its wider ambition to become the largest mobile distributor in the UK and Europe.
Speaking to Mobile, Tech Data Mobile UK and Ireland MD Jim Michel (pictured), said the acquisition opened up major cross-selling opportunities to Tech Data Mobile. He said the company would target Tech Data’s IT business Computer 2000, focusing on accounts specialising in selling enterprise solutions, consumer electronics, PCs, software, AV and printers, and supplies and cartridges.
He said: ‘We will be using Tech Data’s 17,500 IT resellers. We will be working with Tech Data’s other teams, who will be selling anything we have. We are leveraging the Tech Data model. That makes us stronger, better and more powerful than any of our competitors. Convergence is really happening.’
Tech Data Mobile is also using the financial muscle of its parent group to offer aggressive credit deals for partners, as well as deals offering no minimum spend on its accounts. The acquisition also gives Tech Data Mobile access to the 600,000 sqft logistics facility in Tech Data’s Magna Park offices in Leicestershire.
Michel said Tech Data Mobile is central to its parent’s diversification plans. He said: ‘Mobile is one of Tech Data’s fastest-growing speciality businesses and a major part of Tech Data’s diversification strategy. There will be a significant push to establish this brand as the first choice in mobile distribution within the UK market.’
He added that Tech Data Mobile had already carved out a leading position in the mobile distribution industry under the leadership of Tech Data Mobile president Rod Millar, who set up the mobile distribution business in 2007. He said: ‘We are already the largest mobile distributor in the UK, with a 50% share of the market with the widest breadth of vendors including RIM, Samsung, HTC, Sony and Motorola. Rod Millar built that in just five years. And there is no question of us slowing down. We will be going after everything. Being bought by Tech Data means we are much stronger organisationally and financially, with new channels and vendors, which gives us a huge advantage in the marketplace, taking us on to bigger things.’
Michel added: ‘We will be able to grow our mobile business by leveraging the relationships already in place through Tech Data and their divisions. There will be an even bigger focus on our mobile business through existing and new channels that have now become available through the acquisition. Accessories will also continue to grow.’
