Microsoft ramps up production of Surface tablets
Microsoft is reportedly readying a global production of up to 5 million Surface tablets as it gears up to compete against rivals.
The tablets are due for a fourth quarter launch and will go up against Apple's forthcoming iPad Mini, which will reportedly be unveiled next week, Google's Nexus 7, and tablets from the likes of Amazon and Samsung. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft has placed orders with Asian manufacturers to produce between 3 and 5 million devices. These are similar to orders placed by Google and Amazon for their respective tablets.
Availability of the forthcoming device, which will run Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 8 platform, has yet to be revealed although the tablet will go on sale at $499 (£310) for the 32GB model. The latest version of its operating system has been built for the first time with tablets in mind. Surface will be similar in weight and screen size to the Apple iPad.
