Samsung Galaxy S III becomes world's bestselling smartphone

Samsung's Galaxy S III has overtaken the Apple iPhone 4S to become the world's bestselling smartphone for the first time ever, new research has claimed.

A report from Strategy Analytics has said Samsung has hit this milestone thanks to the device's large touch-screen, widespread distribution and generous operator subsidies. The researchers estimated the smartphone shipped 18 million units during the third quarter of 2012. Earlier this week, Samsung announced it had sold 30 million S IIIs since it was launched earlier this year. By comparison, Strategy Analytics said the Apple iPhone 4S only sold 16.2 million during the same quarter. The researchers said many customers were waiting for the new iPhone 5, which went on sale in late September was estimated to have sold 6 million units during the third quarter.

Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said: 'Samsung’s Galaxy S III has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia. However, the Galaxy S III’s position as the world’s best-selling smartphone model is likely to be short-lived. The Apple iPhone 5 has gotten off to a solid start already with an estimated 6 million units shipped globally during Q3 2012. We expect the new iPhone 5 to out-ship Samsung’s Galaxy S III in the coming fourth quarter of 2012 and Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world’s most popular smartphone model.'
