Cath gets PAYG push
Carphone has started offering its Cath Kidston range, which suffered slow pre Christmas sales, to all GSM networks on pay as you go.
Although the January price guide doesn’t indicate it, Mobile has learned that both the 6111 and 6230 are now available on a range of networks. Previously, it was available only on Virgin.
The 6111 is now available on all GSM networks, and the 6230 on O2, Vodafone and Virgin.
A Carphone spokeswoman denied that the move was an indication that it has a big backlog of stock to shift. ‘There is no reason behind [opening it up to all networks on pay as you go], it’s just in line with a trading strategy’, she said.
However Carphone store staff say that the move is helping them to shift the range, which they were struggling to shift in December despite heavy promotion by the retailer. ‘It’s still not flying off the shelves, but we have noticed a sales increase since we can offer it now other networks. Some customers were put off before by only being able to have it on Virgin’, said one store manager.
Sources suggest Carphone has a total of 300,000 of the branded handsets to shift, only a small chunk of which sold in the Christmas run up.
