Smartphone penetration to hit 100% in five years, says Colao
Vodafone’s Group CEO predicted smartphone penetration would be universal within five years.
While the cost of smartphones requires a heavy operator investment upfront, Vittorio Colao said he believed that average revenue per user would also increase as consumers use more data during the course of their contract.
He said currently iPhone users were consuming 30% more data than other handsets and there was ‘finally… more traction’ in the tablet market, with two million users across Vodafone’s network. Vodafone UK said the iPhone 5, which went on sale at the end of September, was the fastest-selling launch of an Apple device to date. Smartphone penetration exceeded 50% in the UK for the first time but Colao said this statistic would be irrelevant within years. He said: ‘In five years, we won’t answer questions about smartphone penetration because all phones will be smartphones.’
