Nokia completes takeover of earthscan

Nokia has completed the purchase of 3D map capture company earthmine as it rolls out its new location service Here.

The cloud-based service can deliver Nokia's maps online and across numerous operating systems. The manufacturer launched its iOS app yesterday, which gives maps for 200 countries as well as the ability save maps for offline reference.

Mapping has become an increasingly important point of differentiation between manufacturers and operating systems. Apple was heavily criticised for its botched launch of its own dedicated Maps app, which led to the departure of iOS chief Scott Forstall. When he apologised to users for the frustration caused by the new service in September, Apple CEO Tim Cook recommended consumers use mapping services from its rivals while it worked on improving the service.
