Samsung rejects underage labour claims

Samsung has rejected claims that underage workers are employed at one of its suppliers. It launched an investigation following claims by China Labor Watch about its supplier HTNS Shenzhen.

The manufacturer met with an alleged underage employee at the supplier on 14 December. A representative from China Labor Watch was also present and Samsung said the employee told them: 'I do not understand why we are having this discussion. I am over 18 years of age.'

The manufacturer added: 'We have also confirmed that two other alleged underage employees, who are no longer with this supplier, were of legal age when hired. During the hiring process, their ages and identities were verified through an electronic device that detects fake ID cards.'

Samsung is currently implementing new hiring policies to strengthen the identity of its staff. It said any contracts with suppliers who employ child labour will be terminated.
