2013 'set to be year of 4G'
A widespread 4G offering in the UK will help drive a threefold increase in 4G handsets shipped next year, according to research agency Strategy Analytics.
The researchers said 2013 will be 'a record year for 4G technology', with Apple, Samsung and LG the leading manufacturers in this area. The 4G auction is set to start in the UK in a matter of weeks, following EE's October launch of next generation services. The operator's rivals will follow with 4G services of their own from spring 2013 onwards.
The researchers said 275 million devices will be shipped to retailers and operators, a substantial increase from the 90 million handsets supplied in 2012. Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics, said: 'It is clear that 2013 will be the year of 4G. LTE smartphone shipments worldwide will exceed a quarter-billion units for the first time. Multiple operators and multiple phone vendors will be launching dozens of LTE models across numerous countries worldwide. LTE has quickly become a high-growth, high-value market that no operator, service developer, component maker or device vendor can afford to ignore.'
