O2 and Vodafone get festive boost
Vodafone customers consumed almost double their normal data use on Christmas Day, while O2 saw text levels grow by 27% on New Year's Eve.
Vodafone said mobile internet usage on Christmas Day was equivalent to more than 10m downloads of White Christmas. It said mobile internet usage was up 67% on 2011 and 44% more picture messages were sent.
Meanwhile, at O2, text volumes were up 10% from 2012's averages and by more than a quarter on 2011. In total, 440 million messages were sent on O2's network during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Gary Booker, general manager for consumer at O2, said: 'Text toasting on New Year’s Eve was used by millions as the way to reach out to friends and family. While we can’t be with everyone we care about as the bells ring out we can virtually show our affection for those who aren’t with us. These stats show that amongst the growth of social networking and instant messaging, many people still like to send a text on New Year’s Eve.'
