Telefónica thinks big with Firefox at MWC

Mozilla is set to reveal more details about its upcoming Firefox OS, after Telefónica Digital CEO Matthew Key promised ‘a big announcement’ about the operating system.

Devices carrying the operating system are set to go on sale during 2013, with Brazil earmarked as the first market. Alcatel and ZTE have already signed up to developing their own products carrying the OS. Firefox is the world’s third most popular web browser and it has been predicted the OS will account for 1% of smartphone sales by the end of this year.

The OS is one of the projects Telefónica Digital is looking at to help stimulate growth. Phone makers will be able to build functions on web-based apps, rather than more conventional applications. This will have less of a pull on the device’s hardware, meaning smartphones can be built at a cheaper cost.

While the operating system was given a sneak peek at CES in Las Vegas earlier this month, many of the features have been kept under wraps. However, Telefónica Digital’s Key said: ‘We are leading the work with Mozilla on the Firefox browser. We will see a big announcement when we are at Mobile World Congress.’
