O2 gives Tu Go the green light

O2 has launched its first over the top (OTT) service, with Tu Go offering its contract customers calls, texts and voicemail from internet connected devices.

The calls and texts ceom from their existing bundle and the service will use a customer's existing phone number. The Tu Go app runs on Apple, Android and PC devices. The app follows the lead of other OTT services such as Skype and WhatsApp, which offer voice and text over the internet. Operators have bemoaned these services causing a fall in service revenues.

Sally Cowdry, O2's outgoing marketing and consumer director, said: 'TU Go is a clear demonstration of the way we are bringing new technological possibilities to our customers – taking access to our mobile network beyond the mobile phone. While it is still in its early stages, and TU Go is a first step, we have plans to develop the services we can offer using this platform – bringing our customers an ever-wider range of digital services on a wider range of devices.'
