Mobile case and screen protector market quadruples in four years
The mobile case and screen protector market has more than quadrupled in size over the last 4 years, growing to 8 million units in 2012, according to latest research from GfK.
Hannah Frost, account manager at GfK said: ‘The total mobile accessories market has grown consistently in both volume and value across the last 4 years. This growth comes as consumers are tied into longer contracts on high end devices and so more investment is being made in accessories to both protect and enhance their existing device’.
GfK sees growth potential in the protectors market with the growth of touchscreen handset sales which accounted for 90% of handset sales in Q1 2013. The protectors market currently represents only 50% of all touch screen handset sales sold in Q1. This shortfall is partly explained by the falling cost of smartphones making consumers less likely to invest in protecting cheaper handsets.
Frost added: ‘However, as touchscreen handset sales continue to grow in share within the smartphones market, it signals that there is still further potential for the case and screen protector segment of the accessories market to further increase sales’.
