Ofcom relaxes rules on spectrum use
Operators will be able to use their 2G and 3G spectrum for 4G purposes in the future, after regulator Ofcom liberalised the rules.
The change means operators will be able to change what they use spectrum for much quicker, instead of going through a lengthy consultation process. Last year, Ofcom took seven months to approve EE's application to use its 1800MHz holding for a 4G service.
In a statement issued this morning, Ofcom said: 'The decision allows mobile operators to increase mobile broadband speeds in future by re-using their 2G and 3G spectrum for 4G, and to plan and implement moves to 4G technology in these bands without having to submit future regulatory applications.'
