Tizen launches app development competition

Tizen is preparing for battle in the OS stakes by offering a $4 million (£2.7 million) bounty to would-be designers of new applications for its forthcoming app store.

The joint enterprise between Samsung and Intel will give developers a $200,000 prize for the best game. Developers can win prizes from $30,000 upwards by designing apps across categories including music, social networking and news.

Samsung is trying to wean itself off the Google OS that has been running on its bestselling devices with the drive behind Tizen. Both companies have denied tensions exist between them.

The competition was launched yesterday and runs through until 1 November 2013.
