Virgin Media's contract base boosted by contract push

Virgin Mobile's customer base crept back over the three million mark, after the MVNO swelled its contract customers by almost 50,000.

The company reported its three month results until the end of June this morning and also announced the appointment for former Vodafone enterprise director Peter Kelly to lead its business wing.

Sales declined year on year in its mobile wing by 5.7% to £124.3m. The business grew its contract base by 49,000 customers to 1.8 million, with prepay customers declining by 19,000 to 1.2 million. Total net adds were 29,800. The business has continued its quad-play policy of selling customers a range of Virgin Media products, with quad-play penetration hitting 16% of its residental cable base.Across Virgin Media, operating cash flow increased 2.0% on 2012 to £427.1m.

The company was bought by US giant Liberty Global in a deal earlier this year. Virgin Media CEO Tom Mockridge said: 'This combination of extra customers and an increase in the average they're spending with us over the year continues to drive our revenue and performance.'
