Google teams up with KitKat for Android branding
Google has revealed its latest version of Android software will be branded after well-know chocolate bar, KitKat.
Android 4.4 is expected to be released in October, although its presumed name, Key Lime Pie, has been dropped to accommodate the Nestle product. A giant Android statue with KitKat body has been erected outside its California HQ, a picture of which was tweeted by Android head Sundar Pichai. The operating system dominates smarphone market share, holding 79% of the worldwide market.
Pichai said: ‘We now have over 1 Billion Android activations and hope this guy in front of the building keeps that momentum going.’
The joint marketing deal was labelled ‘fun and unexpected’ by director of Android global partnerships, John Lagerling, although he told the BBC that neither side was receiving any revenue from the other. He said: ‘This is not a money-changing-hands kind of deal.’
