Vodafone CEO linked to Rogers Communication job

Vodafone offered no comment on speculation over UK CEO Guy Laurence’s future amid reported interest from Rogers Communication.

Mobile understands that Laurence is the top candidate to take over the CEO position at the Canadian operator which becomes available in January. Current CEO of Rogers, Nadir Mohamed, is set to retire in early 2014, and the Vodafone UK supremo reportedly heads the shortlist to take the reins.

Laurence has been with Vodafone since 2000, taking his current position five years ago after drastically improving the fortunes of its Dutch arm as CEO of Vodafone Netherlands. He was charged with turning around the company’s ailing fortunes and improving a brand at the time labeled ‘too stuffy and corporate’.

Laurence recently revealed Vodafone’s 4G proposition, launched last month, which was heralded in some quarters as best value for money because of its innovative entertainment packages. The Canadian Globe and Mail reported that Laurence was ‘top of the Rogers’ shortlist’.

A Vodafone spokesman said the operator had no intention of commenting on speculation, but confirmed Laurence is still employed in his current position. Rogers Communication was unavailable for comment.
