Samsung driving sales of larger screen smartphones
The growing appetite for larger sized smartphones has been underlined with new figures showing more than a fifth of all smartphones shipped during the summer had a display of larger than five inches.
According to figures from Canalys for the three months ending 30 September, more than a quarter of a billion smartphones were supplied to stockists. In Europe, 56 million units shipped, up 22% on 2012. Samsung accounts for half of every smartphone sold, with Apple lagging behind at 13% in second place. Sony, Nokia and LG comprise the remainder of the top five.
The researchers said Samsung is driving the large screened market, accounting for 22% of all shipments of devices with a screen larger than five inches. Research analyst Jingwen Wang said: 'The 6"-plus segment will be boosted next quarter by Nokia’s arrival, but this market won’t develop quickly unless Samsung invests marketing dollars to push its Galaxy Mega range.'
