Motorola has taken a swipe at rivals Samsung and Apple, claiming its new Moto G handset can offer a better experience at a fraction of the cost.
Phones 4u will be the first to stock the quad-core device from Friday (15 November), on tariffs starting from £11 per month. O2 will follow from 27 November and Carphone Warehouse will sell the device from 11 December. David Phelan, mobile technology advisor at Carphone Warehouse, said: 'Hot on the heels of the highly popular Google own-brand phone, the Nexus 5, the Moto G offers plenty of bang for not many bucks – in fact, it’s the cheapest quad-core device on the market. This is a slick, powerful phone that’s bound to attract a wide audience. It’s ideal for someone looking for all the latest functionality without the wallet busting price tag associated with many smartphones and is likely to be a very popular gift this Christmas.'
It is the second handset to get a global launch since Google completed its $12.5bn acquisition of Motorola last summer. The handset, which will be exclusively distributed by Tech Data Mobile, has a 4.5 inch scren with 329ppi. It has a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, with KitKat coming to the handset by January. The device has a 5MP rear camera and 3.8MP front facing camera.
Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said the device will be targeted at the half a billion consumers who will buy a smartphone in 2014. He said if consumers want to buy a smartphone, either they have a compromised experience with a low cost handset or they get a device that is several years old. He said: '[The Moto G] is a smartphone that delivers a premium experience at less than a third of the price of high end phones like the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S4. It outperforms those devices in a lot of ways.'
Speaking about its distribution deal, Rod Millar, president of Tech Data Mobile, said: 'The appointment of Tech Data Mobile by Motorola as a distributor for the Moto G in Europe is a strong endorsement of our pan-European distribution capabilities. With our state-of-the-art logistics systems, Tech Data Mobile can offer fast and efficient delivery services to mobile dealers and retailers throughout Europe. We will be working closely with Motorola to optimise availability of this revolutionary new smartphone for our customers throughout the region.'
Andrew Morley, Motorola's general manager of the UK, Motorola, said: 'Everybody deserves to be on the mobile Internet, and price shouldn’t stand in the way of anyone having a truly good smartphone to get them there. Moto G is a smartphone that delivers a premium experience for a third of the price of current high-end phones. Quite simply, it’s an exceptional phone at an exceptional price.'
