Apple awarded $290m in patents tussle with Samsung
Apple has been awarded around $290m in its patents retrial against Samsung in the United States.
The iPhone maker fell short of the $379.8m it had requested from the judge but the ruling is far in excess of Samsung's argument that it should only pay $52.7m.
The smartphone giants have been tussling in court for more than two years. Apple was originally awarded more than $1bn last year after a jury ruled Samsung had copied several iPhone features. However, the judge in the case, Lucy Koh, upheld nearly $640m and ordered a retrial on the remainder after she ruled the jury had made a mistake in calculating the damages.
A Samsung spokeswoman told Reuters it was disappointed by the verdict, while Apple said the case was about protecting innovation, rather than winning cash from its rival.
