EU gives green light to Microsoft/Nokia deal

The takeover of Nokia's handset business by Microsoft has moved one step closer after the deal was cleared by the European Commission.

The EU said competition from Apple and Samsung will be strong enough not to damage consumers. It said Microsoft's operating system share was 'limited' and it was unlikely it would restrict supply of its OS to other manufacturers. The commission said it would not be in Microsoft's interest to stop allowing rival maufacturers to use the likes of Skype or its Office apps.

Microsoft announced in September that it was buying Nokia's handset business, with the deal expected to be completed by the end of March 2014.
