O2 has revealed it is to trial a new video communications service powered by Six3.
'Clip It' is a free service for Android and iOS devices regardless of operator, and allows users to film video messages of up to 63 seconds and send to acquaintances via a valid UK mobile number, email address or Facebook. Recipients don't need to have to O2 Clip It app or a smartphone to see the messages as they can also be viewed via the mobile-optimised website. Six3 was selected as one of 16 winners from Telefonica's Wayra Academy.
Digital director at Telefonica UK, David Plumb, said: ‘We believe in bringing digital experiences to our customers so they can live a more rewarding life. O2 Clip It is a great example of how we're making this a reality. Research suggests there is a huge demand for video communications but people don’t want to be restricted to app-to-app or specific device or platform. With O2 Clip It, we’re trialling a video messaging service with customers first to learn whether there is an appetite to develop the service longer term.
‘Since graduating from UK Wayra Academy, we’ve been watching Six3 closely and are thrilled to have worked with the team, and Telefónica Digital, to develop this service on a trial basis with our customers.’
CEO and co-founder of Six3, Leigh Middleton, added: ‘Video is more personal and emotive than any other channel. At Six3 we’ve always been passionate about video and believe that it should be something that should bring people together regardless of what phone they have, what network they’re on, if they’re online at the exact same time or not. It’s fantastic that O2 share our vision and we’re proud to have worked with O2 to develop Clip It.’
