MWC 2014: Sony shows off four new devices with entertainment at the heart

Sony has added to its growing entertainment-first portfolio with the addition of four devices including the wearable SmartBand SWR10.

The Japanese manufacturer also unveiled two smartphone incarnations, the Xperia Z2, which has been called the waterproof smartphone with best camera and camcorder, and the Xperia M2. The Z2 combines its camera capabilities with its TRILUMINOS display with live colour LED. Its video mode benefits from 4K resolution and SteadyShot, which makes sure footage stays 'smooth and clear'. Sony also pushes its content proposition by offering six movies with Sony Pictures, a thirty day trial of Music Unlimited and PlayStation Mobile games. The device will be launched globally from next month.

Alongside the new flagship, a sister tablet, the Xperia Z2 tab, was revealed. The world's slimmest waterproof tablet also boasts a TRILUMINOUS display and noise cancelling technology for the user to enjoy content with little disturbance. The tablet will also hit the market from March 2014.

The smartphone maker also strenthened its wearable offering with the SmartBand SWR10, which was built on 'three key pillars', Lifelogging, Wearing Smart and Life tools. The device was named as one of the official smartphone accessories for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and will be available in 60 markets, again from March.

The second of Sony’s unveiled smartphones, the Xperia M2, will be available a month later in April. The 4G-ready handset comes with an 8MP camera and the same entertainment package as the Xperia Z2.

Sony president and CEO, Kunimasa Suzuki, said: ‘Entertainment is in Sony’s spirit. We believe there’s a distinct difference between having, and feeling experiences. This remains true within everything we do – for us, 2014 is about bringing the best Sony technology and content together, and taking it further to create absolutely unprecedented, evocative and unique user experiences.’

EE has already confirmed that it will stock the Z2 and M2 smartphones, and customers can begin to register interest.

EE director of device, Sharon Meadows, said: 'The Z2 is powerful and beautifully designed  handset, with an outstanding screen and unmatched video capabilities that make it ideal for on-the-go entertainment. This device really does take advantage of our 4GEE network, providing a powerful platform for streaming HD movies or sharing your own 4K videos.'
