Samsung has 'gone back to basics' with its new Galaxy S5 flagship revealed at Mobile World Congress.
The hotly anticipated device will be available through retail channels from 11 April, although a UK release date is not yet confirmed. The device was revealed by Samsung president, CEO and head of IT and mobile communications division, JK Shin, who said the device was designed with the customer's needs in mind.
He said: 'We want to send a warm appreciation to all the 200 million customers around the world for choosing Galaxy S as their mobile device. We know we can only succeed when consumers choose us.
'Asking customers around the world, Samsung has learned that consumers do not want eye-popping technology or the most complex technology. Customers want durable design and performance. Samsung consumers want a simple, yet powerful camera and faster and seamless connectivity. And Samsung consumers want a phone that can help them stay fit.'
The Galaxy S5 boasts a 16-megapixel camera with 'enhanced menu and user interface'. Incorporated in the new handset is the 'world's fastest autofocus speed', up to 0.3 seconds and the advanced High Dynamic Range. The device is IP67 dust and water resistant, and offers the user Finger Scanner technology 'providing a secure, biometric' screen locking feature. The back cover is perforated to give consumers a natural grip, while the frame helps to protect the 5.1-inch super AMOLED fully HD screen.
The new flagship is said to offer 'the most advanced LTE experience and Wi-Fi performance' and supports fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11ac and largest LTE frequency supporting Category 4. Users will also benefit from the Download Booster, an application designed to boost data speed. The speed enables customers to download a gigabyte of data in around 30 seconds. The battery supports this faster connectivity, and owners can surf for 10 hours on the web at LTE speed.
Health and fitness has also been earmarked as a key focus for the smartphone. The enhanced S Health 3.0 comes pre-loaded and 'provides a comprehensive personal fitness tracker to help monitor and manage behaviour'.
Samsung vice-president of IT and mobile division, Simon Stanford, said: ‘We’ve decided to go back to basics with the Galaxy S5 and focus on the features and things that matter the most to our customers – namely the camera, ability to view and download data and content quickly and their health and wellbeing. People want a smartphone that enhances and enables their mobile life. The Galaxy S5 represents just that, and we’re excited to see the response to our latest flagship smartphone device.’
The Korean manufacturer also unveiled its new curved wearable Galaxy Fit. Stanford said: ‘We’re excited to be expanding our Gear product portfolio with a range of unique devices so there is something for everyone, irrespective of their different lifestyles, interests and needs. The new range includes the Gear Fit which we’ve designed specifically to help those of our customers that want to live a more fit and active life but don’t want to sacrifice their own personal style or ability to stay connected on the go.’
The device allows users to get instant notifications from Galaxy smartphones, including incoming calls, emails, text messages, alarms, S-planner and applications. The Gear Fit will hit the shelves globally from April. The strap comes in black, orange and mocha grey.
Shin added: ‘I promise you that we will continue to focus on what matters to consumers most. Our innovation will never stop. And we will always be inspired by the people we serve around the world.’
EE, Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u, Three and Vodafone have already confirmed that they will be stocking the device. EE director of device Sharon Meadows said: ‘The launch of a new Galaxy S has become one of the most anticipated moments in the tech calendar and the Galaxy S5 doesn't disappoint. When paired with our 4G network, which offers the world’s fastest speeds, the device provides an unrivalled mobile experience – it's super-powerful, features an amazing display, and comes packed with cutting-edge features that will put it right at the very heart of your digital life.’
Carphone Warehouse UK and Ireland CEO Graham Stapleton added: ‘As a preferred retail partner of Samsung, Carphone Warehouse will be one of the first outlet retailers to bring the S5 to consumers in the UK and we know our customers are eager to get their hands on it.’
