Phones 4u is working to avoid staff cuts following the news that its 160 concessions in Dixons Retail’s Currys/PC World megastores will close by May 2015.
Closure of the concessions, which will hit around 350 Phones 4u staff, is a result of the merger of Carphone Warehouse and Dixons, which both groups confirmed this week would be completed in August this year.
Phones 4u concessions staff have been told they will be found alternative roles in Phones 4u stores or in ‘future retail partnerships’ raising speculation that Phones 4u has sealed a concessions deal with a new partner.
The newly merged company, known as Dixons Carphone, will begin rolling out Carphone Warehouse branded concessions in the 300 plus Curry’s/PC World stores that do not have Phones 4u concessions from August, extending the rollout to replace the Phones 4u concessions from May 2015.
Phones 4u staff expressed concerns about the planned closures this week. One told Mobile: ‘It is very unsettling. Phones 4u have told us there will not be job losses but it is still worrying – the uncertainty of not knowing where we might end up.’
In a statement Phones 4u said: ‘We can confirm that we are working to guarantee the employment of our store staff currently working in Dixons stores beyond the duration of the contract with Dixons, either in our core retail estate or in future retail partnerships.’
