Apple targets the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things continues to gather momentum with news that Apple is preparing a software platform to turn the iPhone into a remote control for lights, security systems and other household appliances.

The software is expected to be displayed at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference next week in San Francisco.

A recent report from Juniper Research forecasts that revenues generated from Smart Home services are set to reach a global market value of $71 billion by 2018, rising from $33 billion last year.

The news closely follows Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail’s announcement of a merger aimed at harnessing the rising market in smart home technology.

Apple is expected to throw down the gauntlet to rivals Google and Samsung with a major focus on smart home technology at its Worldwide Developer Conference on 2 June in San Francisco, according to sources.

The move is aimed at ameliorating the slow down in smartphone sales in developed markets.
