Vodafone signs deal with Alcatel-Lucent to increase 4G coverage
Vodafone has selected Alcatel-Lucent to supply it with metro cells with integrated WIFI as part of its £1bn project to increase its 4G coverage across the UK. Vodafone is investing the £1 billion into its networks and services for this year with an additional £6 billion across Europe as part of its 'Project Spring'.
Alcatel-Lucent will supply the carrier with the LTE small cells with integrated WIFI. The metro cells are low-powered radio-access nodes for inproving coverage to increase capacity and offload traffic. The technology will allow Vodafone to improve network quality and bring faster broadband services to customers.
Luis Martinez Amago, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s EMEA region, said: 'Vodafone Group is taking a leadership role with the deployment of small cells throughout their global properties and by serving as an industry reference with the deployment of a multi-vendor heterogeneous architecture.'
He added, 'In being named a supplier of reference, Vodafone has given Alcatel-Lucent a strong endorsement that our small cells will help them to deliver high quality service to their customers.'
Mobile has contacted Vodafone for comment.
