Virgin primes telly push
Virgin Mobile is expected to launch its first foray into the mobile television within months.
The operator has lined up its Lobster 700TV handset to lead its assault on Orange, Vodafone and 3's respective mobile TV offerings. Unlike the competition, Virgin will use the DAB radio network instead of 3G to deliver its TV broadcasts. This means it will potentially be cheaper to receive than rival services, which essentially function just like 3G data calls.
The service will be available to both contract and prepay customers although the latter will to have to pay quite a significant sum for the Lobster 700TV, which is a HTC manufactured Windows Mobile smartphone. Virgin is currently working to sign deals with a range of broadcasters, although none have been confirmed on the service yet.
