Aldi launches own-brand smartphone

German discount supermarket Aldi has launched its first own-brand smartphone, the Medion Life E4001, retailing at £79.99 on a SIM-free offer.

The Android handset is being manufactured exclusively for the retailer by Chinese manufacturer Medion.

The 4-inch device comes with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, 1GHz dual-core processor, 4GB internal storage and a 2MP rear-facing camera.

It follows on from Aldi's £79.99 tablet, the Medion Lifetab E7316, which was launched earlier in the year.

Competing grocery retailer Tesco will launch its own smartphone in the coming months.
