GfK: Accessories purchases up in weak July
Market research group GfK has found that mobile enhancements grew 18% in July despite the market value for telecommunications being down 8.5% on the previous year. Growth in the market segment value was also down 5.5% on 2013 figures and online sales were down 2.5% month on month. There was a 0.1% improvement in market value compared to the previous month.
GfK explained that the growing share of smart phones within the mobile handsets product category was the driver of the related purchase of accessories as consumers looked to protect their investments.
Ben Wood, Chief of Research, CCS Insight, said:'These number provide further evidence that the telecoms sector has had a rough ride in the first half of 2014. Manufacturers, distributors and retailers will be hoping that the market will pick up over the rest of the year. The IFA show will provide more exciting new products to tempt consumers, while Apple’s new iPhone is guaranteed to reinvigorate the smartphone segment and hopefully increase footfall in retail.'
