Mystery continues to surround the management of Samsung Mobile and IT division with the manufacturer confirming today Rob Orr has left the post of interim head of the division just weeks after taking over from former chief Simon Stanford, who also left unexpectedly in June.
A Samsung spokeswoman said Orr will return to his role as European VP of enterprise business at Samsung Electronics. She declined to say who is leading the mobile and IT team at Samsung UK in his absence.
The spokeswoman said: 'Following a business review of the UK Mobile and IT division Rob Orr will be making a scheduled return to his role in Samsung's European team as VP of enterprise business at Samsung Electronics.
'We will make an announcement when a permanent, full time appointment is made for the UK business.'
Sources claim Andrew Glass, Samsung Mobile's UK and Ireland commercial director, is the front runner to take over Orr’s role. It is not clear if Glass will be appointed in the role on an interim or permanent basis.
Sources said Orr had fallen from favour as a potential replacement to Stanford after clashing with Korean management on strategy.
Orr’s departure from the interim role, so soon after taking up the position, will come as a further blow to the beleaguered manufacturer, which is facing mounting challenges in both the consumer and b2b markets in the UK.
It also comes on the heels of Stanford’s departure in June, which occurred amid claims of falling smartphone sales, unrealistic sales targets, and concerns about the division’s stock holding, distribution and warehousing procedures.
Sources said at the time that Samsung's UK sales team were expected to sell 100,000 Galaxy S5 smartphones a week but were achieving less than 60,000. This in turn resulted in an oversupply of Samsung stock.
Orr quit his post as BlackBerry UK MD to join Samsung in October 2013. He took on the role of vice president of Samsung’s European telecoms operations, becoming VP of Samsung’s enterprise business operations in March this year. When Stanford left in June, Orr was made interim VP of mobile and IT divisions.
Glass became sales director of the mobile division in March 2010.
