Nokia maps future in navigation
Nokia users will soon be able to navigate the world using their phones.
The operator has bought German based supplier gate5, which specialises in navigational software, to provide a GPS based service to customers giving them access to route finders and maps. It also provides the ability to explore over 5000 worldwide city and travel guides, a tool similar to the Travellers Toolkit system launched by Vodafone to its Live! customers earlier this month.
Nokia estimates that the personal navigation device market is in a rapid growth phase, with global market size expected to reach 15 million units in 2006 compared with 8 million units in 2005.
It has yet to announce which of its handsets the tool will be available on, but it is thought it will launch on the N series. It is due to become available to customers later this year.
