Dixons Carphone development director Jon Shaw is to take over from Martin Roberts, as Vodafone head of retail, Mobile has learnt.
Shaw will be expected to hit the ground running in his new role as Vodafone gears up its assault on the retail market, just weeks before Christmas.
The operator is keen to gain dominance on the high street with its 500 new-look stores, following a major retail restructuring this year which has seen it modernise its stores, ditch Phones 4u as a trading partner and massively expand its retail footprint with the acquisition of 130 former Phones 4u stores, following the independent retailer’s demise this autumn.
Shaw brings extensive retail experience to his new role. He worked for Dixons Retail for six years, rising to the role of development director in March this year.
As development director, Shaw was responsible for launching new market opportunities for Dixons Carphone. He also played a central role in the management team overseeing the merger and integration of Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse.
Previous roles at Dixons Retail include regional retail development director, overseeing 7,500 staff and 185 stores in the west UK division and, services operations director.
Shaw joined Dixons Retail in February 2007 from online supermarket retailer Ocado, where he was project manager. His previous post, before joining Ocado was as a development manager at Tesco.
A Vodafone spokesman confirmed Shaw’s appointment.
‘He starts on 1 December, and will be working hand in glove with Martin Roberts until the New Year as he gets to grips with Vodafone’s expanded retail footprint,’ he said.
Cindy Rose, consumer director at Vodafone UK said ‘Jon brings a wealth experience and expertise, especially from his roles at Ocado, Tesco and most recently Dixons. It’s a great time to be joining, with our retail estate larger and in more communities than ever before. Jon has a proven track record of driving retail performance and we’re delighted to welcome him to Vodafone.
She added: ‘Martin’s time in the interim head of retail role will come to an end in January 2015. I’d like to thank him on behalf of us all for his work and achievements.’
