EE 4G customer numbers hit 7.7 million

EE has grown its 4G customer numbers from 2 million to 7.7 million in 12 months, beating its target for 6 million customers by 2015 and setting a record in Europe for 4G growth

EE 4G now covers 80% of the population, including 510 UK towns and cities with populations of 10,000 and above and 3,894 villages and small towns. The operator said it is on target to reach 98% of the population by the end of 2015.

EE said six times more 4G data was uploaded and downloaded by customers in 2014 than in 2013 with traffic driven by customers sharing selfies and videos on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and streaming video from sites such as BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Sky Go. Australian Tim Cahill’s World Cup goal drove a peak in downloading, and New Year’s Eve saw the year’s spike for mobile uploading.
