Symbian phones up 65%
Symbian enjoyed a massive boost in the number of devices powered by its software over the past half year, reporting that shipments were up by 65%.

The company, which makes smartphone software, said 24m Symbian device shipped over the first half of 2006, up from 14.5m over the same period last year.

There are currently 86 Symbian handsets available internationally – up 20 from a year ago. Symbian typically charges around £3 per handset for its software.

The software company's sales are still around 70% to Nokia, although a spokeswoman said this had declined significantly, mostly due to sales of Symbian devices made by other manufacturers in the Japanese market.
