Vodafone to launch Wi-Fi Calling and Voice over 4G services

Vodafone UK is continuing to build its converged network coverage with plans to launch Wi-Fi Calling and Voice over 4G (VoLTE) this summer.

Both launches follow several months of tests for both technologies at Vodafone's network laboratory. Wi-Fi Calling, which uses an existing Wi-Fi services to provide customers with a voice signal without the need to go through an app, is aimed at consumers living in areas where network coverage is limited or where it is difficult to get an indoor signal.

Vodafone is also beginning Voice over LTE user trials ahead of its commercial launch this summer. The technology allows voice calls to be carried across Vodafone’s 4G data network rather than across the operator’s 2G or 3G voice network.

Jeroen Hoencamp, Vodafone UK CEO said: ‘Our Wi-Fi Calling service will ensure that our customers never miss a call. It is another important step towards our commitment to build the UK’s strongest converged network.’

The rollout of Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE are part of a £1 billion network and services improvement programme. The programme has also seen the roll out of HD (High Definition) Voice technology, the provision of 4G+ (Carrier Aggregation) and the delivery of the Vodafone Rural Open Sure Signal programme aimed at giving remote communities 3G coverage for the first time.
